Technology has been a critical force that has made our lives easier and more comfortable. Technology has made advancements in every country sector, including textiles, education, business, or automobile. However, the amalgamation of technology with the automobile industry has been the most successful and has enhanced the way vehicles work and interact.
Intelligent manual transmission cars have played a pivotal role in reviving the joy of driving. Technology has made our driving experience more comfortable than ever. However, with so many automatic transmission cars in India available, it is difficult to choose. With the launch of IMT transmission in India, it is perfect for comparing it to AMT transmission, the popular automatic gearbox in India.
There are different types of car transmission systems. IMT is one of them, and it is an acronym for intelligent manual transmission. It is a clutchless manual transmission without the clutch pedal. Instead, the shifter is the recognisable manual gearbox.
The working of IMT is pretty simple to understand. The essential components of the IMT gearbox include the gear shift lever, which is joined by an intelligent intention sensor, hydraulic clutch actuator, and an electronic transmission control unit. These components work together to shift the gears with a conventional manual gearbox mated to the engine.
IMT transmission cars in India are moved through an “intention sensor” on the gear lever that gets activated when the gears are shifted. These sensors then signal the TCU when the gears need to be changed. Then TCU sends a signal to the hydraulic clutch actuator to engage or disengage the clutch plate. Thus, IMT in cars puts the control in your hands.
Regarding the difference between manual or automatic, automatic is integrated with AMT, whereas the manual is more for IMT. Automatic transmission gearboxes use a complex and unconventional gear and clutch arrangement; the AMT, on the other side, is an automatic transmission. It uses the same gear and clutch setup used in every manual transmission.
In India, Automatic gear cars are equipped vehicles wherein the gear lever and clutch pedal are replaced by a hydraulic clutch actuator system mounted inside the engine, which operates both the gear and the clutch. The AMT system’s actuators are linked to the vehicle’s ECU, which gives it the input to control the gears and clutch.
The gear selection pattern and gear rations are programmed, and that data is stored in ECU. Thus, the ECU automatically controls the actuators to operate both the clutch and gearbox synchronisation whenever the RPM reaches a particular mark. This system works like an automatic gearbox as the driver has no clutch pedal and gear shifting. An AMT transmission can shift manually by engaging the manual mode like an automatic transmission. AMT cars in India are trendy and are integrated into car models like Volkswagen polo, Maruti Suzuki, and Tata Nexon EV.
There are many differences between IMT and AMT. AMT cars have been immensely popular in offering automatic operation at an affordable price. Simultaneously, Hyundai’s IMT technology launch has provided a new alternative that might just prove to be more exciting. So, the question is, which one is better? Get to know the difference between IMT and AMT. The choice is based on various parameters. Some of them are explained below:
The very idea behind selecting cars with automatic transmission is to provide users with comfortable driving experiences and the freedom from changing gears. Since convenience is the primary selling point of automatic, we must compare IMT vs AMT. Changing gear on an AMT car may be abrupt and can take away all your driving experience. In contrast, an IMT may prove to be smoother and give a better driving experience. A test drive of both systems is the best way to decide on the correct one and then finalise.
Considering that IMT cars in Indiaare relatively new, one can expect more comprehensive maintenance needs. Moreover, IMT is less sophisticated than the AMT unit since the gear shifting on board the IMT is done traditionally. Hence, an AMT car will need more care and maintenance than an IMT to ensure efficient performance throughout the car’s life.
Both IMT and AMT cars have their pros and cons. Therefore, the selection between AMT vs IMT is subjective and depends on owners' choices. That being said, both AMT and IMT have been integral to enhancing vehicle performance and forming automatic cars’ future.
