Top 10 Signs of a Bad Fuel Injector

If your car’s fuel injector is not working properly then it can hamper the functioning of your car’s engine. Purchase a second hand car from ABE, as they provide the best quality and service. The signs of a bad fuel injector includes:

1. Rough engine idling

Since an adequate amount of fuel cannot be pushed into the engine at the right time, it decreases your car’s RPM (rounds per minute). This makes your engine stall and you will have to restart your car again and again

2. Vibrating engine

In case of insufficient fuel supply to the engine, the type of engine might vibrate every now and then which is one of the most common injector failure symptoms.

3. You will find it difficult to accelerate your vehicle

Due to faulty supply of fuel, your engine might misfire which will lead to a great pausing of your vehicle before it accelerates.

4. The check engine light of your car will be on

This is one of the most common signs of a bad fuel injector. If the ‘check engine’ light of your car is on, then it might be time to get your fuel injector fixed.

5. Check for a fuel puddle beneath your vehicle

If you see a puddle of fuel beneath your car, then there is a high probability that your fuel injector is faulty.

6. If you smell an unusual odour

Any kind of an unusual odour in your car is a bad sign. If you smell fuel odor when you turn on your car or while driving, it's time to check your vehicle’s fuel injectors.

7. Uncanny engine surge

A bad fuel injector might pump extra fuel into the engine and that can inhibit the engine’s capacity to burn that extra fuel which can harm the proper working of your car’s engine.

8. Frequent visits to the gas station

With a faulty gas injector your engine fuel economy will go berserk and you will have to refuel your car more often.

9. More emissions

Another common bad fuel injector symptomsincludes gas leak which can increase the emissions from your car’s engine.

10. It can damage your car’s cat converter

When the air-fuel- ratio gets imbalanced, your fuel injector signs, the car's combustion system will get badly affected and that can damage your catalytic converter.

How do fuel injectors work?

A fuel injector is an essential component of the fuel delivery system which is responsible for supplying fuel to the engine. Usually vehicles have one fuel injector attached to each of the engine’s cylinders. The injector is directed by the internal computer of your vehicle to pump in the necessary fuel, at a specific angle and at a specific speed.  In a nutshell, a fuel injector controls the fuel that is supplied by the fuel pump into the combustion system of your vehicle.

What causes a Fuel Injector to Fail?

Many reasons could be behind the failure of your fuel injector like carbon build-up or poor quality of fuel. There could also be a ‘heat soak’ happening which means that the fuel that remains after you shut your engine might be evaporating into the fuel injectors which might cause it to work in an improper manner. In addition to that, if you use poor quality of fuel and don't replace the fuel filter every now and then, your vehicle's fuel injector could fail due to a build up of contaminants.

How to Fix a Bad Fuel Injector

You can fix a bad fuel injector by removing the injectors from the engine and cleaning them. You can either get the injectors cleaned with a professional’s help or you can do it yourself. The point is to unclog the injectors so that they work properly.

FAQ’s

1. What does it sound like when you have a bad fuel injector?

If you happen to hear a rough idling voice, then it is a sign that the fuel injector is bad and it is not delivering the necessary fuel to the engine. Also, a fuel injector normally makes a ticking sound when it works, if you fail to hear that sound, you might have a bad fuel injector.

2. What are the three most common problems with fuel injectors?

There are many reasons for faulty fuel injectors but the three most common issues are clogging in your car’s fuel injectors, leaky and dirty injectors. You should remove the fuel injectors and clean them up before putting them back in for your car to function optimally.

3. How do you know when your fuel injectors are going out?

If your engine is misfiring, your car’s ‘check engine’ sign is on, your vehicle’s idling is rough or if your car is not giving the gas mileage like it used to, then you should get your fuel injectors checked at the earliest.
