A comparison of all-season vs. winter tires

The weather is never static as it changes throughout the year. Sometimes, you will come across the summer season and fall and suddenly enter the mystic snowy winter after that. Thus, the vehicle owners have to go for the tyres that are seasonally appropriate to use. Usually, there are three types of tyres in the car: all-season tyres, winter tyres, and summer tyres. However, here we will discuss in-depth the all-season tyres and winter tyres and whether you should go for the all-season tyres or winter tyres for your car.

What are winter tyres?

Winter tyres are the ones that come with higher natural rubber content, which makes their structure appear soft. While riding in these tyres, the interplay between the road and rubber compound changes as the temperature fluctuates and rises accordingly. This change creates a significant impact on the tyre’s grip. However, as the outer temperature falls below 7 degrees Celsius, the winter tyre’s flexibility eventually increases.

Pros of going for winter tyres

Going for winter tyres has its benefits. So let’s have a look at them.

  • Winter tyres are flexible enough and grip well on cold roads, whether it is raining or snowing.

  • There is nothing that can grip the snow. But with the winter tyres, it is easy to grab the snow on the road. As the tyres move over the snow, the snow gets filled on the tyre’s tread grooves, making it easy for the car to move around the compact snow.

  • The dread grooves on the tyres are pretty deep and are thus capable of dispersing any extra water, which improves handling and reduces aquaplaning eventually.

  • Such tyres are more rigid than summer tyres and are cost-effective simultaneously.

What are all-season tyres?

All-season tyres come with rubber compounds and tread patterns, making them suitable for wet conditions and scorching and cold situations. They are ideal for such conditions as they come specially to stand up with the snow and even during the most desirable of the roads. Further, the rubber used in these tyres makes them flexible and pliable, allowing them to work even after reaching the tyre’s freezing mark. However, it must be noted that they are not entirely suitable for the coldest and hottest seasons, even though they are known as the all-season tyres. However, don’t confuse yourself between the all-season and all-weather tires. There is no difference between the all-weather and all-season tires.

Pros of all-season tyres

There are a host of benefits one can get from the all-season tyres. Let’s grab a look at those benefits.

  • All-season tyres are highly beneficial for temperatures falling below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. However, for freezing climates, you can come across the best all-season tyres for snow.

  • They can work effectively on different terrains and so their conditions.

  • They come with a longer life span.

  • Every type of car can easily cope with the all-season tyres, be it a sedan or SUV.

Winter Tyres Vs. All-Season Tyres

Your mind might have always been baffled at the question – ‘Should I go for winter tyres or all-season tyres?’ Well, this entirely depends upon you and the situation. Different situations around us allow us to go for a particular type of car tyre. But what are these situations? So let’s have a look at these situations and find out which kind is better for you.

Your location

In terms of winter tyres, every country has its regulations. In some of them, it is mandatory to go for the particular tyre, while in others, it would be wise to choose. For example, if you live in India or the UK, the temperature is mild in most areas, so that you can go for all-season tyres.

So, the fundamental thing you need to do is to find out whether winter tyres are compulsory in your country or not.

The average annual mileage of your car

If your dwelling is around the area, whether the winters are not too extreme or you do not have to travel around during the winters, you can ideally go for the all-season tyres. All-season tyres or all-weather tyres avoid any hassle concerning the weather or climate and are also cost-effective, ultimately saving a lot of money for the car owner.

The local weather around you

Before you go for a particular kind of tyre, you need to ensure what your local laws say about it. For example, if your local law recommends winter tyres but has not made it compulsory, then you can think of going for the best all-weather tyres. After all, winter tyres are suitable for temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius, but not for the rest of the year when the temperature is moderate. Visit ABE if you're still unsure which tyre is best for your vehicle in winter.
